1. The number of Korean patent applications related to the shipbuilding technology is rapidly increasing

The Korean shipbuilding industry continues to be in a prosperous situation with the amount of ship orders received in 2007 increasing by more than 58%, compared to that of 2006, and the number of patent applications as a result of the relevant technology development also increasing by more than 43%.

At the end of January, 2008, Clarkson Research Studies of Great Britain announced that the amount of ship orders received by the Republic of Korea in 2007 was 32,000,000 CGT, holding 1st place in the world ranking. This number represents 40.4% of the amount of ship orders received in the entire world.

According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO; Commissioner: Sangwoo JUN), the number of patent applications in the field of shipbuilding (B63) increased by 420.2% per year for the last five years and, specifically, rapidly increased by 43.4% in 2007 compared to that of 2006, being much more greater than the 5.3% which has been the percent increase in the number of total patent applications per year.

Among the Korean shipbuilding companies increasing the number of patent applications related to the shipbuilding technology, it is reported that in 2007 Samsung Heavy Industry Co., Ltd. and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co., Ltd. increased the number of the patent/patent applications in the field of shipbuilding by 5.1 times and 4.8 times, respectively, compared to that of 2006.

2. KIPO¡¯s e-learning contents is taking a leap as an international brand

The e-learning contents (called ¡°IP Panorama¡±) related to intellectual property, which was developed by KIPO, is taking a leap as an international brand, in high cooperation with the patent offices of the world. KIPO plans to file an international application for the IP Panorama in the Republic of Korea and Switzerland and to build comprehensive brand management strategies including a trademark and a domain, thereby securing the IP Panorama as an international brand.

KIPO officially released the IP Panorama in the WIPO general meeting held in September of 2007 where 183 countries attended and discussed about the plan to strengthen the international use of the IP Panorama in the ¡®International Seminar for Use of IP Panorama¡¯ held in Jeju in December of 2007.

Further, in the practical business meeting in the field of information with WIPO held in February of 2008, KIPO agreed to additionally develop the IP Panorama in five foreign languages including Spanish, French, Chinese, among others, which are the UN official languages.

At present, the IP Panorama has been promoted, based on the agreement to develop its Thai version. KIPO agreed with Poland to develop its Polish version. The foreign countries including Vietnam, Mongolia, Portugal and others have requested the cooperation regarding the development of the IP Panorama in their respective native languages.

The IP Panorama is the e-learning contents in English made to enhance a learner¡¯s understanding, by providing contents related to the intellectual property rights (including patent, utility model, trademark, design and the like) by applying multimedia technology (such as flash, motion pictures and others) beyond the conventional text format.

3. The president of LG Electronics concluded a patent agreement with GE

LG Electronics has concluded a special agreement with GE of 100 years¡¯ tradition as a company manufacturing home electronic products.

LG Electronics has concluded the ¡®cross license agreement about the living home electronic product technology¡¯ with GE. In accordance with the agreement, the two companies can freely and mutually use their patented technologies related to refrigerators and cooking machinery and tools.

Prior to the agreement, the two companies had to do an avoidance design when developing their own products concerning the patent issues. Now, these limitations have disappeared so that the two companies can help each other in the product development and the product supply at a proper time.

Specially, LG Electronics can more positively advance into the refrigerator and cooking machinery markets in the North America, using the patent technology that GE has acquired in the North America markets.

In 2007, LG Electronics developed as the home electronic product manufacturer being 3rd in the world ranking, with the sales of USD 12,600,000,000 in the section of living home electronic products. Mr. Youngha LEE (54), a president and director of the DA business, said, ¡°Through this agreement, the product competitiveness is much more increasing, and it is possible for LG Electronics to more closely approach to the first place in the world ranking by 2010, by catching up with Whirlpool in this field.

4. The Beijing/Shanghai courts are available concerning intellectual property disputes in China

A seminar, ¡®Chinese Patent Act Revision and Intellectual Property Right (hereinafter, referred to as ¡°IP¡±) Protection Strategies¡¯ was held under the sponsorship of the Federation of Korean Industries on March 27, 2008. Through the materials distributed in the seminar, M.r Yuhuo WU, a lawyer with a Chinese patent agency company, indicated that, when a Korean company advanced into China wants to settle a dispute regarding an intellectual property right through the civil judiciary proceedings, it is better for the company to use the courts of the big cities, such as Beijing, Shanghai and others.

Mr. WU said that Chinese courts have different IP-related examination experiences and specific formalities, depending on Chinese areas. According to his explanation, when an IP right is infringed and the concerned person wants to settle the IP dispute through a civil case, it is advisable to select a court in the area where economy is activated, such as Beijing or Shanghai, or a court in a different area rather than the area where a defendant is located because this court smoothly proceeds the examination of the case.

As China revised the IP related laws and strengthened the IP right protection in consideration of the importance of the IP rights, the seminar was arranged to prepare the countermeasures for Korean companies. About 130 people from companies, schools and research institutions attended the seminar.
