1. A conference of patent trial systems in the Republic of Korea, China and Japan was held

- Intellectual property appeal boards of the three countries directly introduced the IP trial systems and recent issues.

The Korean Intellectual Property Tribunal (KIPT) held the ¡®2016 conference on IP trial systems of Korea-China-Japan¡¯ in the council chamber of the Korean Science and Technology Hall on September 2, 2016 (Friday) by inviting CHANG Tong, vice-chief of the Patent Reexamination Board of SIPO, TANJI Akira, executive chief administrative judge of JPO and patent judges from SIPO and JPO.

In this conference, the trial and litigation systems of KIPO, SIPO and JPO were introduced to Korean IP experts, company people in charge of IP and the general public, focused on patent invalidation trials and litigation corresponding to the core of IP disputes.

Especially, since the patent reexamination/appeal boards of China and Japan which have a relatively high possibility of patent disputes with Korea directly held the presentation the recent trends of trial practices of each country are expected to be better understood by Koreans.


2. A ¡®2016 design protection forum-Seoul¡¯ was held to protect a fashion design

- Diverse IP information was provided for fashion designers

KIPO and Seoul Design Foundation jointly held the ¡®2016 Design Protection Forum-Seoul (subtitle: Fit your design right!) in Seoul DongDaeMoon Design Plaza (DDP) on September 30 (Friday).

This forum introduced IP information that fashion designers have to know to determine the recent imitation reality in the fashion industry, to look for alternatives and to advance to a global fashion industry.

Major contents were as follows:
¡ã analysis of actual state of imitation type, cause and feature of a fashion design,
¡ã effective strategies to secure a right and to take action against a dispute regarding a fashion design,
¡ã legal issues according to a change in a fashion design trend, and
¡ã finding foreign cases and alternative systems to protect a fashion design, etc.

This forum proceeded with the relevant expert(s)¡¯s topic presentation and a panel discussion.

Anyone (designer, student, relevant company staff, etc.) that is interested in protecting a right of a fashion design can apply for participation, without cost, through a design map (designmap.or.kr). In the spot, the participants can listen to various opinions regarding the protection of a fashion design right and solve any curiosity they have by listening to the questions and answers available.


3. Filing trademark applications related for artificial intelligence (AI) is active

- The number of the relevant trademark applications increased to 35 by July this year, showing a rapid increase of two times the total number of the trademark applications in this field as filed for the last 5 years.

Since a Baduk game contest between AlpaGo, Google AI computer, and Sedol LEE, ninth level drew the attention of the country in March of this year, the filing the AI-related trademark applications has been active.

According to KIPO, the number of the AI-related trademark applications was 3 in 2011, 3 in 2012, 0 in 2013, 9 in 2014 and 3 in 2015, reaching a total of 18 for the last 5 years. However, in this year, 35 AI-related trademark applications were filed by July, increasing by about two times, compared with the18 applications filed over the last 5 years.

Especially, the percentage of the relevant trademark applications reached 83% (corresponding to 29 of 35 applications based on July 2016) since last March when the public awareness of AlpaGo increased. The popularity of AlpaGo is considered as influencing the filing of the AI-related trademark applications.


4. The number of patent applications applying Quantum dot to LCD has rapidly increased

According to KIPO, the number of Korean patent applications applying Quantum dot to LCD has steadily increased.

The number of the Quantum dot-related patent applications totaled 268 for the last 10 years (2006~2015). Specifically, it rapidly increased to 63 in 2014 and 84 in 2015, occupying 54.8% (147) of the total number thereof filed over the last 10 years.

By applicants, Koreans filed most of the relevant applications, 258 (96.3%) and foreigners filed 10 (3.7%). This supports the fact that the Korean companies have continuously developed the technology to apply Quantum dot to LCD.

Samsung Display filed the most applications, 81 (30.2%), LG Display filed 40 (14.9%), Samsung Electronics filed 38 (14.2%), LG Innotek filed 29 (10.8%), LG Electronics filed 25 (9.3%).
