1. The trade between Korea-ASEAN has rapidly increased and therefore the number of trademark applications tends to increase

- By countries, Singapore filed more than a half of the total of trademark applications, and by items, foodstuffs had the majority of the trademark applications.

Since the FTA was concluded between the Republic of Korea and ASEAN (Association of South-East Asian Nations) in 2007, trade among these countries has rapidly increased and the number of Korean trademark applications filed by these ASEAN countries is steadily increasing.

The ASEAN consists of a total of ten (10) countries including Singapore, Malaysia, The Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Cambodia.

According to KIPO, the number of Korean trademark applications filed by the ASEAN countries since the conclusion of the FTA between Korea-ASEAN totaled 3,287, showing an increase of about 140%, from 321 in 2007 to 456 in 2014.

By ASEAN countries, Singapore filed 1,661 trademark applications, holding more than a half of the total number (51%), followed by Thailand filing 611 (19%), Malaysia filing 547 (17%), Indonesia filing 262 (8%). Among the ASEAN countries, Laos did not file any trademark application.


2. KIPO and ECCK jointly held ¡®Korea-EU IPR Conference 2015¡¯ in Seoul

The Korean Intellectual Propert Office (KIPO, Commissioner: DongKyu Choi) and European Chamber of Commerce in Korea (ECCK) held a ¡®Korea-EU IPR Conference 2015¡¯ in Conrad Seoul in Yeouido, Seoul on October 22, 2015.

In this event, on the subject of ¡®Korean and European IPR development situation¡¯, Korean and European experts discussed about the recent trends of Korea-EU IPR systems and the IPR protection strategies.

In this conference which was held third, the European Patent Office (EPO) participated as a co-host organization, to make discussions on the patent field including the EU unitary patent system as well as the trademark and design systems.

The director of the Intellectual Property Protection and Cooperation Bureau under KIPO said, ¡°this conference will be an opportunity to confirm the latest flow related to the patent, trademark and industrial design systems of Korean and EU and the IPR protection strategies.¡± The director also added, ¡°this will be a chance to further enhance the IP management capability of Korean companies through the information exchange and know-how sharing of the latest trends and protection policies of IP systems.¡±


3. In the camping popular era, designs related to camping supplies are also popular

- The camping population has explosively increased, leading a rapid increase the number of design applications related to camping supplies.

The era of 3 million camping population! As the income level improves and the leisure time increases according to the introduction of the 5-day workweek system, the camping population has increased. Accordingly, the market size of camping supplies and the number of design applications for camping supplies has expanded.

According to KIPO, the number of design applications for major camping supplies increased from 107 in 2005 to 307 in 2014, with 2.9 times for 10 years. This increase is a relatively high figure, compared with the total number of design applications filed during the same period which increased from 45,222 in 2005 to 64,345 in 2014, at 1.4 times. Nine (9) major camping supplies are sleeping bags, tents, portable pots and pans (Koppel), mats, insect traps (harmful insect deet), camping trailers, barbeque grills, lanterns and hammocks.

Many design applications are still filed for traditional camping supplies, such as sleeping bags, tents, portable pots and pans (Koppel) and mats. In addition, as auto camping catches popularity, the number of design applications for camping trailers has also increased.

The range of the increase in the number of design applications for the tents, a representative camping supply, is big from12 in 2005 to 93 in 2014, with an increase as much as 7.8 times for the last 10 years. The range of the increase in the number of design applications for portable pans and pots (Koppel) was 13 in 2005 to 42 in 2014 with the increase of 3.2 times and the range of an increase in the number of design applications for mats was 17 in 2005 to 58 in 2014 with the increase of 3.4 times.


4. The trend of patent applications for a big data-related technology

The big data technology means a data management technology drawing a meaningful result by collecting a vast amount of data. This is a future-oriented technology to be of considerable help in selecting a right decision of a specific issue by using the vast amount of data collected in society including politics, economy, etc.

Most of the Korean patent applications related to big data is related to the service sector. Especially, the patent applications filed by small and medium companies have remarkably increased.

Based on the search keyword, ¡®big data¡¯, in KIPO¡¯s own DB in the current situation of the big data-related applications, the number of the big data-related applications has steadily continued to increase from 3 in 2011, 56 in 2012, 266 in 2013, 298 in 2014 and 150 in the first half of 2015.

The proportion of the service sector among the big data-related applications filed by small and medium companies fro the last 5 years was 72.8% (377 applications). Specifically, among the 150 big data-related applications filed during the first half of 2015, 68% (102 applications) were filed in the service sector only by small and medium companies. That is, the number of the relevant applications in the service sector by the small and medium companies has sharply increased.
