1. Applications for patent •trademark •design of a new product are in ¡®one place¡¯ by. package examination

- KIPO has expanded the package examination to trademark •design applications since April 4, 2014

The package examination system is to examine a number of applications in time when an applicant desires according to a company¡¯s business strategies. According to the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), this package examination system has been expanded to trademark and design applications from April 1, 2014. The regulations of the requirements for a request of the package examination have been revised.

When an applicant uses this system, the applicant expects to receive, at once, the results of examination of patent, trademark and/or design applications.

Previously, a request of a preferential examination of every application was required to request the package examination of the applications. However, under the improved regulations, a preferential examination may be requested only if needed. Therefore, an applicant¡¯s burden is minimized.

Further, the examination departments of patent •utility model • trademark •design applications cooperate, making it possible to provide the examination services of a diversity of intellectual property (IP) rights at the same time.

2. KIPO announced a plan of education and train for national intellectual properties

KIPO announce a comprehensive plan of IP education and train for 2014, to grow patent warrior to lead the era pf creation •knowledge economy.

The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (IIPTI) under KIPO will open 253 collective study courses and 250 online study courses for civil servants, ordinary people, companies, elementary, middle and high school students, foreigners, etc., to educate about 430,000 people per year (collective study courses for 11,000 people and online study courses for 420,000 people).

The Invention Education Center within the IIPTI operates an invention education for 3,300 students of elementary, middle and high schools. This will be a good opportunity for the students of provincial cities, small and medium-sized cities to be able to approach invention education.

With the intent to secure excellent lectures in the IP fields to train manpower, IIPTI and a Council of a national IP education development jointly operate a ¡®registration system for IP expert faculty members¡¯.

In addition, a tutoring service is provided to the online IP education students, to offer an opportunity for the students to communicate with the experts during a tuition term. Further, a competitive exhibition to use the IP education will be held to create an atmosphere where the education will be applied to an actual work site.

3. Evolving biometrics technology

Biometrics includes fingerprint, face and iris recognition. In addition, there are some technologies which are widely known, such as vein recognition and ECG (electrocardiogram) recognition. The vein recognition is the technology to distinguish an identity using the vein shape on the back of one¡¯s hand or on the vein shape on one¡¯s wrist, considering that the vein shape is different from person to person, like a fingerprint. The ECG recognition has an advantage of monitoring one¡¯s health condition together during distinguishing an identity using ECG data.

According to KIPO, the number of the biometrics technology-related applications filed during the latest three (3) years tends to increase, 216 in 2011, 271 in 2012 and 394 in 2013. The face recognition-related applications, fingerprint recognition-related applications and iris recognition-related applications accounted for 44.7%, 31.7% and 8.6% of the total biometric technology-related applications.

The feature of the recently filed patent applications is for a technology enabling the application of the iris recognition technology to a smart phone without increasing the volume or weight of the smart phone. When banking facilities adopt iris recognition as an authentication process in the future, the portable iris recognition technology market is expected to more expand.

4. The exposure technology of a semiconductor circuit breaks into extreme ultraviolet

- A change of generation has started from an immersion exposure to an extreme ultraviolet exposure.

In a micro-pattern fabricating technology of the next generation semiconductor circuit, a generation alternation has been done to the extreme ultraviolet exposure technology.

The applications related to the extreme ultraviolet exposure have been focused on the compatibility processes of pattern process, reflective mask, photosensitivity materials, etc. This shows that the generation change from immersion exposure to extreme ultraviolet exposure has started.

According to KIPO, the number of the extreme ultraviolet exposure-related patent applications filed with KIPO from 2006 to 2013 totaled 342. Since 2008, the number of these applications has passed the number of the immersion exposure-related applications.

A spokesperson of KIPO expected that Korean semiconductor companies to take the initiative in the semiconductor fabricating process technology using extreme ultraviolet in the future.
