1. A patent automatic evaluation system has a function of analyzing a patent
Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) completed developing a patent automatic evaluation system to quickly evaluate a great number of patents, to automatically search a similar patent and to compare and analyze a competitor’s patent.
When a user inputs a patent number, the patent automatic evaluation system provides information of a quality grade of a corresponding patent. This system evaluates the quality level of a patent by measuring diverse information disclosed in a patent document. This system was first developed in December 2009 and has provided services to the public and private sectors.
This year, the existing system has been drastically upgraded by adding the functions of analyzing the relation between a cited patent and a citing patent, inquiring as to the examination/trial history of a patent, searching a similar patent, and quantitatively/qualitatively analyzing a patent portfolio, to substantially support a company’s and public research institute’s R&D strategy establishment.
The patent automatic evaluation system as developed at present is capable of performing the evaluation of a patent and the information analysis. Thus, this system will be used for the quality evaluation of national R&D patents, the management of patents of companies/universities/public research institutes, the construction of patent portfolios, and the support of R&D strategy establishment.
2. Foreign examiners use Korean patent information
- Use of a service to provide an English translation of Korean patent information has expanded
The number of cases where examiners of the foreign patent offices search has been gradually increasing. The number of searches for Korean patent information translated into English sharply increased from about 3,000 in 2006 to about 200,000 in 2010.
Since November 2005, KIPO has been operating the Korean Patent Information Network (K-PION) service which automatically translates the documents related to Korean patent examination into English, which are provided to foreign examiners.
The examination processing period in KIPO is 15.4 months as of 2009, which is shorter than 25.8 months in US. Therefore, when the same application is examined in a foreign patent office, a foreign examiner may refer to Korean examination information. Through this system, a patent which is registered in KIPO can be more quickly examined in a foreign patent office.
3. Another carbon family, Graphene
- Trends in graphene-related patent applications
The fields where graphene is expected to be used in the future are countless, including semiconductors which are hundreds of times faster than present semiconductors, high-efficient solar batteries, super-capacitors, displays in the form of a scroll being thin like cellophane, mobile phones being put on the wrist, computers being put in a wallet like paper, and high strength composite materials including high strength films, among others. Thus, graphene can be really called a ‘dreamy new material’.
The trends in patent applications regarding graphene are as follows:
About 2,550 patent applications related to graphene were filed in the five years from 2005 to 2009 and the number of the patent applications has steadily increased year by year.

The US has 51%, an absolute majority. The Republic of Korea has 11%, whereby it is considered that Korea has made considerable investments in research and development.
In graphene production, it is still a step of seeking a mass production method. However, if mass production is possible, a country taking the lead in graphene commercialization will dominate the future growth power industry, such as innovated displays, solar energy and nano materials.
4. Samsung Electronics directs its strength in securing nano technology patents
Samsung Electronics concluded a patent sharing agreement with Unidym, a US company owning the biggest carbon nano tube (CNT) in the world. This is to secure the nano technology including the ‘Nano TV’-related manufacturing technology in which CNT is used as a backlight for TV.
Prior to this agreement, Samsung Electronics concluded the strategic alliance regarding the ‘Quantum dot’ related patent with Nanosys, a US nano technology company, to devote its strength in dominating nano technology.
By this agreement, Samsung Electronics can early settle the issue concerning the patent related to the nano TV in course of preparation as the next generation TV. Unlike an ‘LED TV’, a nano TV includes a ‘field emission display (FED)’ using CNT as a light source of backlight unit (BLU), whereby a screen contrast ratio is maximized to realize a clearer picture.
The main points of the strategic alliance previously concluded by Samsung Electronics are that Samsung Electronics would invest $15 million to Nanosys through Samsung Venture Investment, and they would jointly develop the next generation electronic materials.
This investment has been made to secure the nano application technology, such as semiconductors, solar energy, LED, etc. Nanosys is the company which developed a high density memory device based on the latest nano technology, with Intel and Micron since 2004.
