1. Your curiosity of patents will be satisfied anytime and anywhere!

- Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) develops mobile Web and App for consultations with patent clients, to be provided without charge

KIPO announced that they developed Web and App for consultations with clients through smart phones to be provided for free, following the service for consultations with clients through telephones and Twitter.

The mobile Web and App for consultations regarding patents to be newly shown classify and arrange about 850 cases of consultations with patent clients by categories and realize the keyword search function of title and contents and the bookmark function.

Considering compatibility to the maximum, the mobile App for consultations with patent clients have been developed to be used regardless of the version of the operation system in both Android phones and i-phones. A user may search for ¡°consultation case¡± in Android market and App store and download the App to be installed.

2. KIPO took 3rd in world ranking with the number of design applications

The number of design applications filed with KIPO is recorded as taking 3rd in the world ranking.

According to KIPO, as a result of analyzing ¡°World Intellectual Property Indicators 2010¡± published by World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), the number of design applications filed with KIPO is 3rd, following China and EU, among the G 20 member countries.

The number of design applications filed in foreign countries by Korean citizens and companies was about 3900, taking 5th among the G20 member countries. Thus, Korean¡¯s activities of creating the international design intellectual properties are considered as being very active.

Design competitiveness is also greatly increasing.

3. Korean search engines should be faster and smarter in order to survive

When the same sentence or term is input, why are the results different by search service sites? It is because there are differences in information search engines by the search service sites.

According to KIPO, the number of patent applications of the relevant technologies has increased since 2003. A survey shows that the applications filed by Korean applicants are mainly related to the use and application field of search results, whereas the applications filed by foreign applicants are focused on the improvement of performance of search engines, such as search and analysis algorithms.

The technology trends of applications filed by Korean and foreign applicants are as follows:

Among the applications filed by Korean applicants, 104 applications are of technology relating to the use and application of search results (39.0%), 954 applications are of technology relating to search and analysis algorithms (37.1%), 314 applications are of technology relating to search servers and databases (12.2%), and 301 applications are of technology relating user interfaces (11.7%).

In comparison, among the applications filed by foreign applicants, 530 applications are of technology relating to search and analysis algorithms (45.2%), 284 applications are of technology relating to search servers and databases (24.2%), 269 applications are of technology relating to the use and application of search results (22.9%), and 90 applications are of technology relating user interfaces (7.7%).

4. ¡°Femtocell¡±, small mobile telecommunication base station, is rising

- Trends of femtocell-related patent applications

The use of wireless internets triggered by the smart phones, such as iPhones (Apple) introduced in the Republic of Korea and Galaxy (Samsung), among the others, has rapidly increased mobile traffic.

Actually, through a ¡®2010 Report¡¯, Cisco, a global network company, expects the mobile traffic which was only average 0.09 exabyte (Eb=109Gbyte) per month in 2009 to increase by average 108% per year, reaching 3.6Eb/month in 2014.

Meantime, to remedy the problem of the rapid increase in traffic, the relevant industries have answered with a plan to disperse the traffic through a detour net strategy, such as femtocell and Wi-Fi and to reduce the mobile telecommunication network load.

Femtocell is a small mobile telecommunication base station a wireless LAN repeater (AP: Access Point) to internet connections indoors, such as at home or in an office, making it possible to use the internet in mobile devices. Thus, Femtocell is noticed as an alternative to solve a shadow area.

The number of the patent applications was 16 in 2007, rapidly increasing to 132 in 2008 and 164 in 2009.

By applicants, 242 applications (64%) were filed by big companies, 70 applications (19%) were filed by universities and institutes, 19 applications (5%) were filed by medium and small companies, 5 applications (1%) were filed by individuals and 41 applications (11%) were filed by foreign applicants. By Korean companies, 108 applications were filed by Samsung Electronics, 50 applications were filed by LG Electronics, 47 applications were filed by the Korean Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute, 35 applications were filed by SK Telecom, 26 applications were filed by KT (Korea Telecom). By major foreign companies, 22 applications were filed by Qualcomm and 10 applications were filed by Alcatel-Lucent. ¡¡
