1. ¡®PATINEX 2010¡¯, the latest patent information trends in one place

As the capability of strategically utilizing patent information has been raised as the core competence in both of a company¡¯s and a national competitiveness in the global economy system, the place for sharing patent information between patent information suppliers and demanders is now presented in the Republic of Korea, like the patent information exhibitions held in the US, Japan and Europe.

This event is held to introduce the major issues of the international intellectual property society, such as ¡®open technological renovation¡¯ and ¡®standard patent, and to seek the government¡¯ and companies¡¯ coping strategies.

To serve as a hub of global patent distribution, PATINEX 2010 is differentiated from that of the last year. The event had been held for two days in KOEX every year but this year it is held in depth for one day in Imperial Palace Hotel. The constitution of a conference is also detailed by operating a policy seminar, an exhibition and a workshop, for a more substantial discussion.

In addition, the online community system is now completely reorganized so that the PATINEX online homepage (www.patinex.org) can provide information among multi parties. Therefore, the people related to the industry-university-institute patent information can use the PATINEX online homepage as the place where they can share the latest intellectual property trends and strengthen the human network.

2. Creative Capital Corporation purchasing patents/ideas for commercialization has been established

¡®Intellectual Discovery¡¯, the first Korean intellectual property expert company which purchases the intellectual properties, such as patent rights, and commercializes them, has been established on October 16, 2010. Thereby, the intellectual property business era has been open in the Republic of Korea. This company will purchase, reinforce and develop any promising intellectual properties owned by Korean or foreign companies, institutes and universities, to start a high value-added licensing profit business. To this end, the private sector and the government cooperates to raise the creative funds of 500 billion Korea Won.

On that day, about 200 intellectual property business related people attended the celebration of the establishment held in the grand ballroom of COEX in Seoul, including Kyung-man HEO, CEO of Creative Capital Corporation, Man-soo KAN, the chairman of Presidential Council on National Competitiveness, Kyung-hwan CHOI, the minister of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Myung-hee YU, the official of the national Future Strategy & Vision of ChongWaDae (the blue house), and Chang-gyu HWANG, the head of the Knowledge Economy R&D Strategic Planning Unit.

Mr. HEO said, ¡°[We] will form an independent intellectual property business model and build a cooperative network with diverse intellectual property business participants in universities, institutes and patent corporations by the end of this year, to create a virtuous circle system of the intellectual property development and the successive commercialization.¡±

3. Netpia won the trial for the Korean address-related patent in the Supreme Court

Netpia, a company specializing in Korean internet addresses, announced that they finally won the appeal trials, ¡®trial for invalidation and trial for confirmation of scope regarding the patent relating to a Korean address processing method in the internet explorer (IE) 7.0 and following environments¡¯, which were brought to the Supreme Court by Digital Names.

According to Netpia, Microsoft (MS) linked the brand of a company name being input in an address window to its own search from IE 5.0 and its processing method was cunningly maintained after IE 7.0.

The patent related to the present trials was developed to overcome these matters. In the application of the patented method, when a Korean address of a company or a public office is input in an address window in the browser environments including and following IE 7.0, it is directly linked to the relevant website, without making any additional changes or taking any special measurements.

A spokesperson of Netpia said, ¡°As the company developing the operation system (OS) has searched a company¡¯s brand and a public institution¡¯s real name by using its own browser to divert them as keyword advertisement, a burden of advertisement costs which weak medium and small companies shall bear has increased. ¡¦ The results of these trials are considered as showing to MS that Netpia can technically and legally cope with any action of stealing an online brand.¡±

4. The number of applications filed by Chinese applicants has increased while the number of the PCT international applications has decreased

Among the worldwide economic crisis, the Chinese new technology development is considered as being still active.

The number of new patent applications filed in 2009 decreased by 4.5%, compared with the number thereof in 2008.

A worldwide decrease in the number of patent applications is considered as being due to a decrease in R&D investment based on the uncertainty of the world economy and financial crisis.

The number of applications this year is expected to increase only 2.8%.

However, last year, the number of applications filed by the Chinese companies increased 8.5%.

By companies, GM and Toyota respectively showed big decreases of 24.5% and 19.8% in the number of applications, whereas, Chinese IT companies ZTE and Huawei respectively recorded increases of 45% and 27%.

A relevant spokesman said, ¡°China has tremendous investment funds in the domestic research and development and in the industrial design.¡± ¡¡
